The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Machinist’s Mate William E. Brennenstuhl (NSN: 2871707), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as the Chief Machinist’s Mate in charge of the After Engine Room of the U.S.S. BUNKER HILL (CV-17), on 11 May 1945, in the Western Pacific. When his ship was severely damaged by determined enemy air attack he took charge of the After Engine Room and although smothering smoke, terrific heat and toxic gases filled the engine room until some members of his crew collapsed, he maintained the After Engineering Plant, including vital fire pumps, in operation throughout the crisis. His cool courage, inspirational leadership and high professional skill contributed most substantially to saving his ship from greater damage and loss of life and were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
