    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander John E. Brennan, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action. On 6 January 1945, as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. SOUTHARD (DD-207), he engaged in action against a determined air attack while conducting combat minesweeping operations in Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, Philippine Islands. With great skill, a fine display of seamanship, coolness, courage and leadership he directed emergency repairs to his seriously damaged ship. Through his efforts, repairs were effected overnight and his ship was able to operate and take her place in the minesweeping formation the following morning. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
