Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces-Pacific Ocean Areas, General Orders No. 55 (October 25, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Joe M. Divin (ASN: 39683657), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company D, 706th Tank Battalion, 77th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Yigo, Guam, on 7 August 1944, while directing his tank during a tank-infantry action to break through an enemy strongpoint. Sergeant Divin’s vehicle was hit and set afire by anti-tank guns and, although painfully and seriously wounded, he attempted to traverse the jammed turret so the crew members could escape through the driver’s hatch. Unable to man the gun because of damage to the mechanism, Sergeant Divin place a tourniquet on his leg to conserve his strength and by extraordinary effort in the face of continuous enemy fire, drew himself out of the turret hatch, thus clearing the only exit for the trapped crew. Sergeant Divin was directing their escape from the burning tank when he was killed by enemy machine gun fire. His supreme heroism, gallantry and unselfish concern for the safety of his crew saved their lives at the expense of his own. Sergeant Divin’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 77th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
