The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Fire Controlman Louis J. Brendle (NSN: 2340949), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Radar Operator in the U.S.S. BARB (SS-220), during the EIGHTH War Patrol of that Submarine from 21 May 1944 to 9 July 1944. His high degree of skill and outstanding ability in the operation of the Radar enabled him to furnish his Commanding Officer with valuable information which contributed directly to his vessel’s success in sinking five enemy ships by torpedo fire and two enemy ships by gunfire for a total of 37,500 tons.
