(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Santo J. DiSalvo (ASN: 31260789), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Mittelwihr, France, on 18 December 1944. When his squad was pinned down by heavy enemy fire, Private First Class DiSalvo, by rising, drew all enemy fire upon himself, enabling his men to withdraw to cover. Then, although a target for enemy machinegun fire, he single-handedly captured the enemy emplacement. His extraordinary heroism and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
