The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Quartermaster Second Class John R. Brannen (NSN: 6131712), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while aboard the Y.M.S. 334, during her action against the enemy off Tarakan Island, Borneo, on 2 May 1945. Quartermaster Second Class Brannen was blown out of the pilot house by an exploding enemy shell. Although he was wounded, he crawled back and resumed his station at the wheel until he was relieved. His coolness and courageous acts were an inspiration to his shipmates. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
