The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain Harold E. Bramston-Cook (NSN: 0-82145), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Beachmaster on the Staff of the Commander THIRD Amphibious Force from 27 June 1944 until 15 August 1945. Captain Bramston-Cook contributed materially in the planning of amphibious landings in the Palau Islands and Leyte and Luzon Islands by his thorough and detailed studies of beach conditions, and his timely advice in matters concerning the ship-to-shore movements. His complete knowledge of the employment of pontoon causeways and barges was instrumental in effecting a considerable increase in the cargo capacity of the assault beaches. He personally coordinated activities on the beaches in the initial assaults upon Leyte and Luzon Islands, during which period he was subjected to numerous enemy air attacks and to imminent threats of surface attack by major forces of the Japanese Fleet. His initiative, foresight, and untiring devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Captain Bramston-Cook is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
