The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Radioman Second Class John Conrad Bramer, Jr. (NSN: 6533204), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as aircrewman of a carrier-based dive bombing airplane in action against the enemy fleet in the vicinity of the East Philippine Sea on 20 June 1944. In the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire and in the presence of enemy fighter aircraft, he made effective use of his guns to frustrate an attacking enemy fighter, thus assisting his pilot who scored a direct hit on an enemy fleet oiler. During retirement he strafed and further damaged another fleet oiler. While returning in complete darkness to his own forces and fuel exhaustion necessitated a water landing, he assisted his pilot in abandoning the airplane successfully and with sufficient equipment to insure safety until their rescue. His courage and skill were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
