The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Boatswain’s Mate John R. Bradley (NSN: 3718674), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving aboard the U.S.S. NEW ORLEANS (CA-32), during an engagement with Japanese naval forces in the Solomon Islands area on the night of 30 November 1942. Despite injuries he received when a terrific explosion severely damaged his ship, Chief Boatswain’s Mate Bradley continued to perform the duties of his station, and to assist in the evacuation of patients trapped in the gas-filled and flooding Sick Bay. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
