The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign James H. Bradley, Jr. (NSN: 2685497), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity against the enemy. During a heavy depth charge attack against the U.S.S. SCAMP (SS-277) on 18 September 1943, a hull fitting carried away allowing a large stream of water under great pressure to enter the ship. When Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class Wilbert William Dalwitz, USN, made a superhuman effort to close the outboard hull valve, but was unable to force his body against the pressure of the water stream, he instantly visualized the situation and threw his weight against Dalwitz, forcing him into position where he could reach the valve. His action prevented serious damage and possible loss of his ship and her crew and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
