The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Seaman First Class Howard O. Bradley, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving aboard the U.S.S. NEW ORLEANS (CA-32), in action during an engagement with Japanese naval forces in the Solomon Islands area on the night of 30 November 1942. After his ship had been severely damaged by a terrific explosion, Seaman First Class Bradley courageously and tirelessly continued his efforts in saving the ship. Without regard for personal safety he entered gas-filled and flooding compartments in the performance of these duties. His conduct was a source of inspiration for his shipmates. Throughout and after the engagement his actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
