The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Lieutenant Commander Ignatius J. Bradecamp (NSN: 0-126440), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism non the Island of Ie Shima on 7 July 1945. When fire broke out in an ammunition depot, Lieutenant Commander Bradecamp, the Island Command Fire Marshall, realizing that the entire depot was in danger, with complete disregard for his own safety, promptly led a crash truck to an unprotected position within 100 feet of the exploding ammunition. At the risk of his own life, he personally manned the fire hose remaining steadfastly at his self-appointed task amidst exploding projectiles until the fires in both the main adjacent stacks had been extinguished. By his complete disregard of danger in extinguishing a violently dangerous conflagration, Lieutenant Commander Bradecamp displayed heroism reflecting the highest traditions of the military service.
