    December 1, 1942 – January 15, 1943

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Bruce Godfrey Brackett (NSN: 0-82939), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action. During the period from 1 December 1942 to 15 January 1943, he participated on several occasions in night cooperation with PT squadrons in which enemy vessels were sunk. The pilots flew during December in the following nights: 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 28. During January they flew on 2, 3, 6, 12 and 14 January. The night which Lieutenant Brackett and Lieutenant Hauge were killed, weather was unfavorable to any air operations and both of these pilots voluntarily took off to render whatever assistance they could. Several flares were dropped but, owing to heavy rains the PT’s were unable to take advantage of the illumination. Both planes encountered heavy anti-aircraft fire, and it is not possible to determine whether or not this was the cause of their loss. Lieutenant Reichel was commended on 2 January by the PT Commander for his assistance 5 January but he failed to return from the Russell Island search and was believed to have been shot down. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
