The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class Eugene Donald Boyn (NSN: 6667772), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism while serving in a United States Destroyer during operations in heavy seas in the Pacific on 3 March 1944. When a large wave washed two men overboard from his ship, he, voluntarily and with not thought for his own safety, jumped over the side, and together with two other men swam to the aid of one of those struggling in the water and helped bring him, dazed and shocked, back through the raging seas to the side of the ship. His daring action on this occasion in all probability contributed toward saving the life of a shipmate and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
