    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Ellis Griff Boyles (NSN: 0-25089), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the Pacific Area from 15 to 21 July 1944. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Boyles completed twenty flights in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.

Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Boyles completed his fortieth flight in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Ellis Griff Boyles (NSN: 0-25089), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a carrier-based fighter airplane assigned to a fighter sweep against aircraft and installations in the vicinity of Formosa, on 12 October 1944. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Boyles personally shot down and destroyed two enemy fighter airplanes and probably destroyed another thus contributing materially to the success of the operation. His skill, coolness and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
