The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Lykes M. Boykin (NSN: 0-98651), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Commander of a carrier-based fighter squadron in operations against the enemy in the area of Hainan. On 16 January 1945, he led a flight of eight planes through adverse weather conditions for considerable distance to the target. When a group of enemy planes were encountered he immediately initiated an attack, and by his own skillful airmanship succeeded in shooting down one of the seven enemy planes that were downed by his flight. When a pilot from another group was forced to make a water landing near the target area, he promptly assumed control of rescue proceedings, while circling the downed pilot, and by his efficiency and resourcefulness in directing rescue facilities contributed greatly to the safe return of this downed pilot. In spite of the distance to his base and his dwindling gas supply he remained until rescue had been effected. His coolness and courageous leadership were inspiring and were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
