The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Aviation Ordnanceman Second Class Wayne Allen Boyer (NSN: 6487276), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as combat aircrewman, Bombing Squadron ONE HUNDRED EIGHT (VB-108), during operations of the United States Naval Forces against the Marshall-Gilbert Islands on 4 December 1943. As aircrewman in a plane, which, while on a 2,000-mile search and reconnaissance mission over the Marshall Islands, destroyed two and damaged one of eight intercepting enemy planes in a bitter engagement lasting one-half hour, he, although severely and painfully wounded in the initial attack heroically refused to report his injuries or call for aid, but effectively manned his gun throughout the attack, pouring deadly fire into the enemy planes. This he accomplished despite the fact that he had maintained a diligent watch and otherwise performed his duties efficiently for more than seven hours of patrol flight prior to the attack. His disregard for his own safety and fearless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
