The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Apprentice First Class Freeman J. Boyer, Sr. (NSN: 155212), United States Navy, for heroic conduct while serving on board the U.S.F.S. NEW YORK on the morning of 4 April 1900. When a shipmate was struck on the head and knocked overboard by the swaying lower ladder while rigging in the port accommodation ladder, Apprentice First Class Boyer immediately jumped overboard, held the unconscious man’s head above water and passed a rope around him, by which the victim was hoisted aboard the NEW YORK. Through his timely and courageous actions in saving the life of another, Apprentice First Class Boyer upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Awarded in 1956 in lieu of previously presented Letter of Commendation by the Secretary of the Navy.)
