The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class Lewis E. Boyd (NSN: 6242557), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism as a member of Bombing Squadron NINETY-FOUR (VB-94), embarked in U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-16), while assisting in the rescue of a combat aircrewman from an airplane which had crashed into the gun turret of a carrier that was operating off the coast of Japan on 13 August 1945. Although the plane was on fire and an unexploded heavy caliber bomb from the plane was on the deck, with complete disregard for his own safety, he climbed on the wing of the plane to aid the injured combat aircrewman who was trapped in the rear cockpit. By his courage, the combat aircrewman was released from the plane. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Navy.
