The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant Wentworth Alfred Bowman (NSN: 0-119661), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism in saving the life of a Japanese Prisoner of War during a war patrol of the U.S.S. PIPER (SS-409) in enemy controlled waters. After the submarine in which he served had several times come alongside two Japanese survivors in a swamped lifeboat, only to have the enemy castaways refuse all offers of assistance, Lieutenant Bowman realizing that much valuable information could be obtained from these prisoners, and with clear understanding of the fact that he would undoubtedly be left on the surface if one of the many enemy planes known to be in the immediate vicinity forced the submarine to dive, unhesitatingly and with total disregard for his own safety, leaped into the sea, grappled with one of the enemy and, despite his frantic struggles, subdued him and dragged him alongside the ship where he was brought aboard. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
