The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade George Frank Bowers (NSN: 0-156726), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a pilot attached to Fighting Squadron SEVENTEEN (VF-17), operating in the Solomon Islands and Bismarck Archipelago areas from 27 October 1943 to 8 March 1944. During the two tours of duty, Lieutenant Bowers took part in seventy-nine combat missions over Japanese territory. On 5 and 11 November, he aided in providing fighter cover for two task forces during assaults against the strong enemy base at Rabaul. He participated in numerous strafing missions which resulted in severe damage to ground installations and the destruction of two cargo vessels and eight barges. On two occasions, he successfully repulsed enemy aircraft which were attacking other planes in his group. On 30 January, while escorting bombers in a strike against enemy targets, approximately twenty fighters attempted to intercept the formation. Despite damage to his plane, he remained with the bombers and probably destroyed one Zero. His courageous conduct, excellent teamwork and superior airmanship contributed materially to the success of all missions and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
