    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Commander John B. Bowen, Jr. (NSN: 0-63377), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States during enemy action. Commander Bowen was attached to the Staff of the Commander South Pacific Force & Area as Communication Officer prior to the declaration of war and since served continually in that capacity. During this period he took part in the Coral Sea action on 7 and 8 May 1942, as Communication Officer of the Task Force Commander. He performed his duties calmly and efficiently while under enemy air attack and was personally responsible for the excellent Task Force communications. Commander Bowen reported to the South Pacific Area on 8 October 1942 , where he has been serving ever since on the Staff of Commander Aircraft, South Pacific Force as Communications Officer. During this period Commander Bowen has contributed greatly to the success of our operations against the enemy Japanese. As Communications Officer his duties have carried him into the combat area where he has worked efficiently and calmly as the representative of the Commander Aircraft, South Pacific Force.
