The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Harris Dixon Bougue, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Damage Control Officer of the U.S.S. COLHOUN (DD-801), in the vicinity of Okinawa on 6 April 1945. During an overwhelming and highly coordinated Japanese attack his ship was struck by bombs and several suicide planes which started severe fires and caused the loss of all power and water pressure. Despite continuing attacks he courageously directed the successful fighting of the raging fires, thereby saving many lives. His superb leadership and inspiring courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
