The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Radioman Second Class Robert Dean Borrison (NSN: 3055857), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as aircrewman in a carrier-based dive bombing airplane in action against the enemy fleet in the vicinity of the East Philippine Sea on 20 June 1944. In spite of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire and the presence of enemy fighter aircraft, he carried out his multiple duties coolly, calmly and effectively, assisting his pilot who scored a direct hit on an enemy fleet oiler. He strafed enemy ships on retirement during which his airplane, in company with four others, was attacked repeatedly by a force of six enemy fighters. He immediately brought his guns into use against the enemy fighters and by his coolness and skill, was instrumental in warding off the enemy airplanes, two of which were severely damaged. During the attempted return to his forces, which was made in total darkness, his airplane’s fuel became exhausted and a water landing was necessitated. He assisted his pilot in abandoning the aircraft with sufficient equipment to allow them to survive until rescued. His courage and disregard for his own safety were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
