The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Millard F. Bornstein (NSN: 0-112433), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. On 11 March 1945, as Commander of a Mariner Rescue Plane, he landed his aircraft in the South China Sea off Triton Island at a great distance from friendly forces and in the face of adverse landing conditions effected the rescue of six downed airmen, whose plane had crashed at sea. His actions on this occasion displayed outstanding courage and diligent devotion to duty, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Bornstein (NSN: 0-112433), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight over Gunto Suido on 29 July 1945./ As Patrol Plane Commander of a Rescue Mariner he rescued a downed flyer despite heavy anti-aircraft fire during his sea landing and subsequent take off. His exemplary airmanship, coolness under fire, disregard of his own personal safety, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
