The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Seaman Second Class Nick Borich (NSN: 6602070), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of a gun crew of the U.S.S. DEWEY (DD-349), during an enemy air attack on U.S. Naval Forces, 8 May 1942, in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Even though wounded by an enemy strafing attack early in the engagement, and requiring medical attention, he refused to leave his battle station and remained at his post and maintained the fire of his gun. This action resulted in the destruction of four enemy planes by his ship. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
