The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Engineer Richard J. Bordeaux, United States Navy, for heroism while serving on board the S.S. JOHN BANVARD as Chief Engineer during the advanced landings on the Anzio-Nettuno area, Italy, on 26 January 1944. While unloading in the port of Anzio, Italy, the S.S. JOHN BANVARD was struck by several aerial bombs during a heavy enemy air raid and the ship was so extensively damaged that she was ordered abandoned. Notwithstanding the danger of spreading fires and further explosions, Chief Bordeaux remained on board the stricken ship, promptly and fearlessly entered the engine room and amidst bursting steam and water lines he regulated valves in the darkness, which enabled quick restoration of auxiliary power. Later, by his skillful and untiring efforts in effecting emergency repairs, the ship was able to proceed to the port of Naples, Italy, under her own power. The extraordinary heroism, determination, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Chief Bordeaux were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
