    Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces-China/Burma/India, General Orders No. 141 (July 29, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald W. Delorey (ASN: 0-1308314), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with 3d Battalion (Khaki Combat Team), Task Force Galahad, 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional) (Merrill’s Marauders), in action against enemy forces in Burma, on 29 July 1944. On that date, near Sitapur Burma, Company K Unit was held up by machine gun fire from the right flank. After the leader of the right platoon was killed, Lieutenant Delorey, although wounded, went forward at great risk of his own life and, using a sub-machine gun, killed the enemy gun crew, This action allowed the company to continue the advance. Lieutenant Delorey took command of the right of the line until a defense perimeter was established. He was sent to the rear that night for medical care but returned to action the following morning and led his platoon with skill and daring until he was wounded a second time and forced to leave the field. First Lieutenant Delorey’s gallant actions were an inspiration to all his comrades and exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
