The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Zachary A. Booth, Jr., United States Naval Reserve, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Gunnery Officer of the U.S.S. PETROF BAY (CVE-80) during her action in the Philippine Islands on 25 October 1944. By tireless effort and intelligent and endless training in gunner and discipline, he maintained his batteries in a state of efficiency whereby his gunners coolly and calmly remained at their stations, firing and servicing their guns in the face of gravest danger. His services contributed toward keeping his ship at a sorely needed time, in operation. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
