The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign Buford A. Booth (NSN: 0-226866), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving on board U.S.S. SAVANNAH (CL-42), during the invasion of Italy. On 11 September 1943 during an enemy air attack the ship was hit by a large bomb which penetrated the top of a turret and exploded below decks causing fires which filled the forward part of the ship with heavy fumes and gasses. Ensign Booth quickly and courageously went to the rescue of men who had been overcome by the fumes inside the forward turrets and in gas filled compartments. With great fortitude he continued to assist in their removal until he himself was overcome by the effects of the gasses. His self-sacrificing efforts in the face of imminent danger contributed materially to the saving of several lives. The exceptional bravery and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Ensign Booth were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
