The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Robert Lee Boone (NSN: 6365906), United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct in rescue work during a fire and explosion at Waipio Amphibious Operating Base, Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, on 21 May 1944. In constant peril of flying debris from exploding vessels he assisted in searching the shoreline for casualties, and later, in disregard of personal safety, boarded two severely damaged fireboats, to aid in the rescue of trapped and injured crewmen and render medical assistance. His bravery and heroism were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
