    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain Claude A. Bonvillian (NSN: 0-6036), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States at the U.S. Naval Boiler and Turbine Libratory, Navy Yard, Philadelphia, since October 1940. Captain Bonvillian, by his outstanding zeal, high order of leadership, farsighted policies, and great technical skill made contributions of extreme value to the war effort as Director of the U.S. Naval Boiler and Turbine Laboratory. The design and high degree of reliability of the boiler installations in ships of our victorious Fleet, the thorough training of large numbers of inexperienced crews to operate these boilers, the development of the combustion type fog generators, the success of the Naval Research Laboratory Project at the Naval Boiler and Turbine Laboratory, the far reaching developments in fuel oil, the expansion of the Laboratory’s facilities for research and development work in main propulsion machinery, as well as many other items of great importance, were made possible by his untiring leadership and personal contributions. Captain Bonvillian has distinguished himself and reflected great credit upon the Naval Service.
