The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Bobbie Eugene Boney (NSN: 0-379055), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in operations against the enemy in the vicinity of Honshu, Japan. On 9 August 1945, flying as a wingman in a division of carrier-based fighter planes, he and his section leader attacked an enemy destroyer escort at Onakawa Bay, Honshu, and in spite of intense accurate anti-aircraft fire, pressed home his attacks with utter disregard for his safety, scoring a direct heavy caliber bomb hit on the stern of the destroyer escort. This bomb hit and that of his section leader caused internal explosions which destroyed the enemy vessel. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
