The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Milton John Bonar, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the Pacific Area. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bonar was pilot of an SB2C-3 airplane engaged in dive bombing enemy shore installations on Iwo Jima the morning of 4 July 1944. Target for this attack was hangars and shops at the northern airfield. His plane was observed to be hit by anti-aircraft fire in the early part of his dive and to catch on fire in or near the bomb bay. He continued in his dive and released his bombs which were observed to hit a large hangar. In finally attempting to pull out of his dive his plane went out of control and crashed into the sea. It is believed that neither he nor his aircrewman survived.
