The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Gunner’s Mate Stanley Merlin Teslow (NSN: 3212374), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy on 14 October 1944, while serving as Turret Captain aboard a cruiser operating in Central Pacific Waters. In spite of concussion, smoke and flame which entered the gun chamber, while the ship was under attack, he displayed leadership and coolness which calmed his mount crew and continued the fire of his mount. By thus maintaining the fire of his turret he contributed to the destruction of eleven enemy torpedo bombers. His coolness, courage and skill were an example to the men in his turret and were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
