The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Charles Vincent Bolton (NSN: 0-250625), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a pilot of a carrier-based dive bomber in the vicinity of the Mariana Islands. On 20 June 1944, he participated in the attack on the Japanese Fleet during which his squadron in a well coordinated attack, seriously damaged and probably sank one enemy carrier. Following the attack he was forced to make the long hazardous flight back to his own task force under most trying and difficult conditions. His courage and perseverance on this occasion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
