The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Seaman First Class Julius O. Bohn (NSN: 3426393), United States Navy, for heroism aboard the U.S.S. CHENANGO (CVE-28), while engaged in operations against the enemy in the vicinity of Okinawa, on 9 April 1945. After a fire was started among parked planes when a landing plane jumped the barriers, he joined a group in a forward sponson where a blazing plane bearing a bomb, rockets and ammunition had been plunged. Despite exploding rockets and ammunition he helped keep a stream of water playing on the bomb, thus preventing its explosion. His heroic efforts also prevented spread of the fire and extensive further damage to his ship, and were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
