The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Walter J. Bodeman (NSN: 8149947), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving aboard the U.S.S. LST 695 on 24 October 1944, off Leyte, Philippine Islands. When his ship was struck by an enemy torpedo he immediately went into darkened and flooded areas of the ship and materially aided in effecting vital water-tight security. Despite his own wounds he also aided in rescuing other wounded men who were trapped in a flooded compartment. His courage and concern for his comrades was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
