The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Lyle Joseph Deffenbaugh (ASN: 0-288505), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 1st Armored Division, in action in Tunisia in 1943. Major Deffenbaugh’s battalion was fired upon at close range by heavy machine gun fire. In the confusion which resulted, the personnel of two of his companies became intermixed. Major Deffenbaugh stood in full view of, and within close range of the enemy, shouting directions and orders to the companies. The enemy quickly picked up his position and directed heavy machine gun fire at him. He completely disregarded his own welfare by continuing to give the necessary orders until the companies were reformed and progressing with the attack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Deffenbaugh, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
