The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Fireman First Class Stanley W. Blowers (NSN: 5651589), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism while serving aboard the U.S.S. TRANQUILLITY (AH-14), on the night of 4 December 1945, when he was acting as Engineer aboard a motor whaleboat which was returning to his ship from the Naval Operating Base, Buckner Bay, Okinawa. A heavy sea was running and as the boat neared the gangway the bow hookman lost his footing and fell overboard. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he dived overboard and managed to hold the heavily clothed man above the water, at the same time attempting to reach a group of life preservers which had been thrown from the boat and were floating nearby. He succeeded in keeping the stricken man afloat until aid arrived, thereby undoubtedly saving his life. His alertness, calm manner and personal courage were an inspiration to all with whom he served and were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
