Bliss, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight . At approximately 1330, 15 December 1942, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bliss, pilot of an OS2U-3, dropped two depth charges on a Japanese submarine in twenty feet of water off Kila Point, Guadalcanal Island, and assisted a U.S. Destroyer in sinking the submarine. At approximately 1330 on 28 December 1942, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bliss, pilot of an OS2U-3 while on a routine patrol mission over Tulagi Island, Solomon Islands, sighted a Japanese submarine and assisted a U.S. Destroyer in sinking same. At approximately 0930 on 2 January 1943, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Dale, pilot of an OS2U-3, strafed a Japanese barge en route from Russell Islands to Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal Island, Solomon Islands, causing it to explode with the crew and supplies aboard.
