The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Storekeeper Second Class Arnold Blanton, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Assistant Director Operator of a Forty Millimeter Gun Mount on board the U.S.S. DALY (DD-519), in the vicinity of Okinawa on 28 April 1945. During a highly coordinated and savage Japanese suicide attack he directed the gun under his control in delivering a devastating fire which contributed greatly to the destruction of several enemy planes. After his ship was severely damaged, and he himself seriously wounded, he remained steadfast at his battle station and continued to defend his ship until forced to receive medical attention. His disregard for personal safety and his devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
