The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Harold Donald Blake (NSN: 6702011), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism in rescuing survivors of a turret fire on board the U.S.S. MISSISSIPPI (BB-41), on 20 November 1943 while his ship was engaged in shore bombardment of Makin Island. Under conditions of great personal hazard he unhesitatingly entered Turret II while the fire was still raging and filled with smoke and gas, and, with complete disregard for his own safety, did outstanding work in the rescue of survivors, and then rendered assistance in extinguishing the fire. His bravery, coolness, and prompt action, performed in the face of great danger to himself, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
