The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Jehu L. Blades (NSN: 453499), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving with a Navy Helicopter Rescue Unit, on board the U.S.S. PRINCETON (CV-37), in waters off Korea, on 1 April 1951. Braving extremely poor weather conditions which precluded fighter cover, Lieutenant Blades voluntarily flew his helicopter deep into hostile territory in the face of intense enemy fire in an attempt to effect the rescue of a downed airman. Although encountering severe ground fire at the rescue site, he succeeded in picking up the downed pilot and in carrying him to safety. By his outstanding courage, initiative and selfless efforts throughout, Lieutenant Blades upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
