The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Kenneth Leon Black, Jr. (NSN: 0-110272), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the amphibious landing at Lingayen Gulf on 9 January 1945. He assumed command of the U.S.S. LCT(G) 1037 after the Commanding Officer had been severely wounded and the mechanical efficiency of the craft badly impaired. At the same time, he led and maneuvered his task unit which was under constant mortar fire to successfully complete their mission. His courage and leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
