The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Seaman First Class Fenton Wilson Bingham (NSN: 6555523), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism on 24 October 1944 near the Philippine Islands. After his ship had been hit by a bomb from an enemy aircraft, he was forced to enter the water, and was rescued by a boat from an assisting ship. While in the boat, he saw an injured shipmate in the water, and without hesitation, or regard for the risk involved, he dove back into the water and brought the injured man to the boat. His courage and disregard of personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
