The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Machinist’s Mate Third Class Gerald Richard Bigorowski (NSN: 3128055), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights in operations against the enemy in the vicinity of the Nanpo Shoto Group, Nansei Shoto islands, and the Japanese Mainland. As a combat aircrewman of a carrier-based Torpedo bomber during the period 10 February 1945 through 6 May 1945, he participated in twenty strikes against enemy shipping, airfields, and installations, inflicting extensive damage. His skill and courage were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Machinist’s Mate Third Class Gerald Richard Bigorowski (NSN: 3128055), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against major units of the Japanese fleet off Kyushu on 7 April 1945. As turret gunner of a carrier-based Torpedo Plane, he participated in a daring attack on a Japanese battleship and four screening destroyers, during which his pilot scored a torpedo hit on the battleship. While retiring, his plane was caught in a cross-fire of intense anti-aircraft fire and manning his gun in a cool and courageous manner, he raked the decks of the warships with accurate fire. While his .50 caliber bullets could not do major damage, they served as a diversion and contributed materially to the safe retirement of his plane. His marksmanship and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
