The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Seaman First Class Bruce Ormand Biggar (NSN: 8525932), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving aboard the U.S.S. JOHN WEEKS (DD-701), on 9 August 1945. Although mortally wounded when his ship was hit by gunfire, he remained at his station and succeeded in drawing attention to a fire which had broken out in the vicinity of his battle station. Only after corrective action had been initiated did he proceed to get medical attention for himself. His disregard for his personal being and determination to avert calamity for his ship were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
