The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Commander James Voigt Bewick (NSN: 0-72373), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commander of an escort division, screening carrier units from 18 October to 29 October 1944, while engaged in combat operations against the enemy. Commander Bewick displayed exceptional ability in organizing and training his vessels which did material damage to the enemy, engaging in a direct attack on a vast and superior element of enemy major warships. His actions contributed to the success of the entire operation. His skill, determination and outstanding leadership throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
