Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 243 (September 7, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Robert Samuel Dayton, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 59th Armored Infantry Battalion, 13th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces near Plattling, Germany, on 29 April 1945. Captain Dayton’s company was subjected to withering enemy mortar and artillery fire as they moved forward to establish a bridgehead across the Saar River. With utter disregard for his own safety he exposed himself to intense hostile machine gun fire, led the advance towards the bitterly-defended bridge, directed elimination of enemy machinegun emplacements, and deployed his men in defensive positions. Although momentarily stunned by enemy shell fire during the course of the fierce action, this intrepid officer continued to lead his men with inspirational courage and personally killed seven enemy soldiers. Captain Dayton’s heroic leadership was instrumental in the successful establishment of the bridgehead. His outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
